Are Your Old VHS Tapes and Negatives Safe? Maybe Not.
We see it all the time.
Boxes of old VHS tapes tucked away in garages. Shoe boxes full of negatives stored in wardrobes. Family memories hidden in damp basements, hot attics, and forgotten cupboards.
Most people assume those memories will still be there when they finally decide to sort through them.
Unfortunately, that’s not always the case.
Old Media Doesn’t Last Forever
VHS tapes, negatives, slides, and even printed photos are all vulnerable to age, moisture, heat, dust, and mould.
And once damage starts, it can happen faster than many people realise.
Over the years, we’ve had customers bring in VHS tapes literally coated in mould. Sometimes the mould is visible through the cassette window, other times the tapes smell musty or have already started sticking internally.
At that point, things get tricky.
Why Mould on VHS Tapes Is Such a Problem
Mould doesn’t just sit harmlessly on the outside of a tape.
It can spread across the magnetic tape itself (the part that actually holds your precious recordings). Weddings, birthdays, kids growing up, family holidays, all stored on a very delicate strip inside the cassette.
When mould grows:
- Playback quality drops dramatically
- Audio can distort
- Footage can flicker or disappear
- Tapes can jam or snap
- The mould can permanently damage the recording
Even worse, mouldy tapes can damage professional playback equipment too.
Because of this, heavily mould-affected tapes can sometimes become impossible, or very risky, to transfer safely without specialist cleaning processes.
Sadly, every now and then we see tapes that have deteriorated beyond recovery.
Negatives and Slides Are Also at Risk
Negatives and slides may look fine sitting in a box, but time and storage conditions slowly take their toll.
Common issues include:

-
Colour fading
- Dust and scratching
- Moisture damage
- Sticking together
- Mould spots
- Warping from heat
And unlike digital files, there’s no backup copy if the original becomes damaged.
Some of the most important family memories only exist on those little strips of film.
“We’ve Been Meaning To Do It For Years…”
We hear this almost daily.
Life gets busy, and digitising old media always seems like something that can wait until “later.”
But the reality is that every year matters when it comes to preserving ageing media.
Especially here in New Zealand, where garages, sheds, and older homes can experience big swings in temperature and moisture levels throughout the year.
The Good News? A Lot Can Still Be Saved
The earlier old media is checked and digitised, the better the chances of preserving those memories properly.
Many tapes, negatives, slides, and printed photos can still be transferred, restored, enhanced, and safely backed up into modern digital formats.
Once digitised, your memories become much easier to:
- Share with family
- Store safely
- Back up
- Turn into albums or framed artwork
And perhaps most importantly actually enjoy again.
Don’t Wait Until It’s Too Late
If you’ve got old VHS tapes, negatives, slides, camcorder tapes, or boxes of family photos sitting at home, now is the perfect time to check on them.
The condition of old media rarely improves with age.
But preserving those memories today could mean your children and grandchildren get to experience them for decades to come.
And trust us there’s nothing quite like seeing someone watch forgotten family footage again for the very first time.
